I recently decided to try out Botox as a means to take care of some fine lines and wrinkles that were starting to show permanently on my forehead, and to take care of the “elevens” between my eyebrows.  I was tired of looking like I was frowning or scowling anytime I woke up or was taking pictures outside. I turned to ViVA Day Spa to help me out with this annoyance, and I went to see Brittany Cantu, who is a Certified Injector and Medical Esthetician.  I have had injectables before (juvederm between my eyebrows just before my wedding, and Dysport last year also at VIVA Day Spa), and they had worked out quite well, so I wanted to try Botox to see if the results would be the same or any different.  I’ve documented my first experience getting Botox, and have also asked Brittany a few questions that I had prior to getting this “work” done.

Questions I had for Brittany Before Getting Botox

Q: What do you guys charge for each unit of botox?

A: Botox $12 per unit/ and Dysport is $3.50 per unit (but  with Dysport you need about 2.5 times the amount of units).  We offer a variety of sales throughout the year which brings Botox as low as $9.99 per unit.

Q: What’s the difference between Botox and Dysport? Is one better than the other?
A: It’s brand vs brand. I always say its like comparing Nike and Reebok. Both brands claim they are the better option (like Nike says you can run faster in their shoe). Ive seen patients get fantastic results with both! Some patients get longer lasting results on one brand but not the other. It’s all based on how your body responds to the specific product. Im really happy with both products performance on both my patients and myself.
Q: How long does it take to work?
A: With both Dysport and Botox I advise patients that it can take 5-10 days to start working. Ive seen it work as fast as 3 days in, but I personally take 10 full days. It gradually sets in and slows the movement of the expression.
Q: How long does it last?
A: Both should last around 3 months. It varies based on how fast the body metabolizes the products. The quicker your metabolism the faster you will go through the product.
Q: Is there anything that can be done to maintain results? Like don’t squint, down frown, etc?
A: Both products are injected into the muscle so there isn’t a whole lot you could do to externally to maintain the results. The product does help you to not make a certain expressions (like frowning with the eyebrows) so after some time of getting it your muscles almost “retrain” to make that expression less often. Keeping a great anti-aging skincare routine is best in between treatments for overall maintenance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Q: Are there any skincare products that can be used in conjunction with botox to extend the results or help with anti-aging?
A: I personally love the SkinCeuticals Eye Cream. It has the best ingredients to combat all the factors that lead to dehydrated skin that creates a tired, wrinkled look. I not only use it around my eyes, but also in between my brows for the 11s and across  my forehead. Im also a huge fan of products with caffeine! I choose caffeine over Retinols because retinol (retin-a, retinoids, retinol) can be to harsh on some skin types and are only recommended for use a total of 3 months out of the year. Caffeine helps circulation and is gentle enough topically that you can use it everyday.  **Scroll down below to shop some of the best SkinCeuticals products in case you’re not in the Austin area and can’t pop into one of VIVA Day Spa’s locations**
Q: What are some wrinkle “prevention” options? Are there any specific ingredients in skincare lines that we should be looking for?
A: Wrinkle prevention is all about exfoliation and proper sun care. Make sure you exfoliate 1-2 times a week with an active acid or enzyme and wear proper SPF when in direct sun.
Q: What should one look for in a medical spa or technician/aesthetician when considering injectables
A: When considering Injectables I recommend scheduling a consult first. There are lots of options in the Austin Area or wherever you live that cater to your desired results. What I usually recommend is looking at the staff in the establishment and deciding if you like their look or not. Most of the time that’s a great reflection of the Injectors style. Everyone is looking for something different so you have to find the match to what your desired results are.
Q: Do you guys have any promotions going on that you want me to include in the blog post?

My Experience Getting Botox

Honestly, it took no time, it was a bit surprising–less than 5 minutes in the chair and little to no pain!  The most sensitive area for me was the area just above my eyebrows, but even then it felt like a tiny prick–kind of like a bee sting.  I had no bruising, although some people may have slight bruising in the injected areas, but the technician will be able to tell even before you leave.  Brittany told me was to not lay down a few hours after the treatment, and to not wear makeup on the area for at least an hour.  She also advised against strenuous physical activity and consuming large amounts of alcohol.  Don’t miss my before and after video at the bottom of this post!
