Second Bar + Kitchen is one of my favorite lunch spots, as well as one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. I was able to take some family friends that were in town, and had a nice, long lunch with good conversation. I ordered a basic salad along with the apps for the table, because I didn’t want to be too full for happy hour which I have planned for this afternoon :). However, in addition to the dishes in the pictures below, I recommend the following, especially for dinner:
-Buffalo Fried Pickles, with Gorgonzola and Bull’s hot sauce
-Chicken Fried Olives, stuffed with pimento cheese
-Black Truffle pommes frites, with grana padano, and truffle aioli
-Veal Meatballs “arrabiata”, with fennel and grana padano
-Pepperoni Soup, with san marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, garlic croutons
-Congress Burger: house ground brisket+chuck, shallot confit, gruyere, greens, tomatoes, horseradish pickles (you can add seared fois gras, over EZ egg, avocado, crisp pork belly)
-Black and Blue pizza (any pizza, really)
-last but certainly not least (maybe my favorite thing on the menu): THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS, served with smoked bacon, mint, and feta.

I love to start with their blistered shishito eppers with miso aioli. Like a good Basque (quarter basque), I order these any time I see them on the menu. They’re like the “pimientos de padrón.”

One of my other favorite appetizers is the Avocado Fundido (melted avocado), served with queso fresco, house chorizo, chipotle mass chips.

If you want something light, their Petite Green Salad is a safe bet. I love the radish, radish sprouts, chives, and tangy red wine vinaigrette.

They occasionally change their menu seasonally, and this time that I came in they had a really decadent Goat Cheese Ravioli, with peppery wild arugula, tangy green olives, bread crumbs, and sweet red pepper.

Last but not least, I wanted to enjoy a little dessert and some coffee. I ended up choosing The Dark Chocolate Brownie bite. Perfect amount so you don’t feel guilty 😉
